Regular fluid changes are one of the cheapest ways to keep an engine healthy. Intervals vary by car and oil type, so treat the numbers below as general guidance and always check your logbook.
Engine oil
Many cars call for an oil change every 6 months or around 10,000 km, and some full synthetic oils allow longer intervals. If you do mostly short trips, tow, or drive in dusty or stop-start conditions, change it sooner.
Coolant
Coolant protects against overheating, freezing and corrosion, and it wears out over time. Many manufacturers suggest replacing it every few years. Always use the coolant type your car specifies, and do not mix different types.
Signs it is time for a service
- Dark, gritty oil on the dipstick
- Engine running noisier than normal
- Oil or temperature warning lights
- Coolant that looks rusty or has dropped below the minimum mark
